Introduction

Web design for member platforms doesn’t always sound like a thrilling topic—until you realize the scale. Ver.di, one of Germany’s largest worker unions, representing hundreds of thousands of members, needed a major overhaul. Their existing union membership website design and UX modernization were long overdue—the platform was outdated, hard to navigate, and far from engaging.

KUBE Studio brought us in to change that. Fast. And with purpose.

Our goal was clear: create a modern, responsive website that serves as both an information hub and a member self-service platform. With a focus on member portal UX design, we stripped away the clutter to deliver a clean, intuitive experience.

The clock was ticking. Expectations were high. We rolled up our sleeves and delivered.

The challenge

Let’s say your platform has thousands of members. You offer yearly bonuses, a growing archive of campaigns, and a backend that’s… less than ideal. You want users to find what they need fast—and maybe even enjoy the experience.

That’s what Ver.di needed for their union membership website design and UX modernization. What they had was a patchwork of disconnected tools, inconsistent layouts, and no clear design system. The risk? Confusion. Low engagement. Missed opportunities.

And oh, they needed a working concept before their contact at KUBE Studio left for vacation in three weeks. By focusing on member portal UX design, we delivered a solution that streamlined functionality and enhanced user engagement just in time.

Our approach

We split the project into two parts: the user side (public/member-facing) and the administration side (dashboard + backend interface). But first, we tackled the part that mattered most to the members—their experience. It was all about union membership website design and UX modernization.

Here’s how we broke it down:

1. Kickoff and fast wireframes

We joined forces with KUBE Studio in a detailed video call to align on the goals, structure, and must-haves for this union membership website redesign. Then we built the first wireframes based on their sketches in Excalidraw and internal notes.

2. Landing page

This was Ver.di’s shop window. It needed to:

  • Showcase the yearly bonus program
  • Let users check if they’re eligible
  • Guide members to register or log in
  • Feel on-brand without feeling bureaucratic

We used bold typography, clear CTAs, and playful icons to bring clarity and structure, ensuring a mobile-first union website experience.

3. Bonus flow

For the “Bonus 2023 beantragen” section, we designed an intuitive eligibility check with just two questions. If the user passed, they’d see a dynamic form to apply and get confirmation. If not, they’d get polite but clear feedback.

Simple. Intuitive. Stress-free.

4. Member dashboard

The logged-in area needed to deliver a seamless member portal UX design. It had tabs for:

  • Bonus overview
  • Personal data
  • Company info

We created a layout that could grow with future needs while staying straightforward and user-friendly.

5. Style guide for developers

While this wasn’t a traditional design system, we delivered a flexible style concept—including colors, layouts, form components, and states—so KUBE’s developers could easily expand on the system later.

By focusing on union membership website design and UX modernization, we transformed a complex process into a clean, user-centered experience. Whether it’s for trade union website redesign or advocacy organization website development, this project set a strong foundation for future growth.
